Hotel Plaza in Västerås, Sweden, has long had the vision of creating spaces that both support the hotel’s growing business and reflect its identity as a modern meeting place. When the public areas were due for renovation, Kinnarps was commissioned to develop a design concept and interior design solution that would realise the vision of a cohesive whole, where function and atmosphere go hand in hand.
Today, guests are welcomed into an impressive lobby with a metropolitan feel. With a ceiling height of 14 metres and room for groups of up to 800 people, it serves as a lively living room for both international guests and locals. It’s a space for meetings, moments of pause and urban energy – contemporary yet warm in atmosphere.
Tobias Hultberg, CEO and partner at Hotel Plaza, sees the project as a major success:

“The high level of design and furnishing has opened a whole new chapter for Hotel Plaza in Västerås. The spaces now reflect our brand and support our operations in a way they simply didn’t before.”
An attractive and functional entrance
The previous entrance was small and uninviting, dominated by escalators and limited flow. It has now been transformed into an open, welcoming area that connects the hotel’s operations and provides space for both hotel guests and conference visitors. The Aura armchair and sofa, Neo Lite bar stool and Matsumoto table create an elegant yet inviting atmosphere.
One of the project’s challenges was to design an environment that could accommodate large numbers of people, while also appealing to business travellers and families on weekend getaways. The interior design needed to find the right balance between Scandinavian and international, inviting and elegant.
Fredrik Backman, Kinnarps’ responsible sales representative and interior designer for the project, explains:
”It’s quite a wide spectrum – the space needs to feel welcoming even for just two people, yet also handle a flow of 50–60 guests arriving at once. That was a real design challenge!”

Interiors that strengthen identity
The interplay between Kinnarps’ Scandinavian design language, the vibrant colour palette and the curated artwork on the walls creates the inviting yet international feel that is an essential part of Hotel Plaza’s identity.

To further strengthen the hotel’s identity, a major investment in art accompanied the renovation. The hotel already had an extensive collection, which was both expanded and more prominently integrated into the interiors. Through a collaboration with Västerås Art Museum, the collection was complemented with selected works from the museum’s own holdings.
Art and interiors in thoughtful harmony
The art at Hotel Plaza is, in itself, a reason to visit. In the restaurant, lounges and bars, you’ll find works by world-renowned artists such as Bob Dylan alongside pieces by local talents. The Rho sofa, Yarn armchair and Tinnef table contribute to a cosy yet continental expression.
Before the renovation, the functionality and character of the space didn’t match the hotel’s ambitions. Today, every area is used to its full potential, and the whole feels cohesive and full of life. Hotel Plaza has strengthened its brand and created environments that not only open up new business opportunities but also give every guest a memorable experience.
Tobias Hultberg concludes that close collaboration was key to the project’s success:
“The inspiration, hands-on proposals and recommendations we received from Kinnarps’ interior designers were crucial to the project’s success. They helped us choose high-quality furniture and materials and created a solution with timeless aesthetics. We feel confident that we’ve made an investment built to last.”
